We can create a continuously changing magnetic field by rotating a magnet. This can be done by attaching the magnet to a DC motor as shown in the figure. Motors used in the DVD players are suitable, one unit is included in the kit.

• Attach the magnet to the motor, as shown in the fgure.
• Power the motor using a 1.5 volt drycell (The figure shows the motor powered by PV1, but it is not advisable to power inductive loads by the outputs of the device).
• Connect the coil etween A1 and Ground.
• Bring the coil near the rotating magnet and adjust the position to get a good sine wave.

The frequency of the generated waveform is same as the number of rotations of the magnet per second.

This experiment can be extended to use more than one coil, to generate two phase or three phase AC. The angle between the phases will be same as the angle between the axes of the coils.
